Playa del Carmen, Municipality of Solidaridad (Riviera Maya). Construction is the second most important industry of the municipality.
In 1995 its population was 1,000 inhabitants in 2003 and had a population of 49,000 inhabitants; At least 7% of the population residing permanently in Playa del Carmen is of foreign origin.
In Playa del Carmen pre-Hispanic times was called "Xaman-Ha" (meaning "North Water") and was a starting point for the Maya in their pilgrimage to the shrine of Ixchel in Cozumel. Around him are various attractive mainly related to ecotourism, adventure tourism and beaches.
XCARET.- Eco-archaeological park located 75km south of Cancun and 6 km south of Playa del Carmen on the Riviera Maya. Since its founding in 1990 and because of its exceptional natural environment, Xcaret has developed several programs for the conservation, reproduction of flora and fauna typical of the Mexican southeast as: Sea turtles, manatees, spider monkeys, deer, etc. Among its facilities is the first butterfly from Mexico and the Coral Reef Aquarium, where you can see structures, reefs in their natural habitat. In addition you can perform various water sports in cenotes, underground rivers, lake and beach. They can appreciate traditions of the Maya people and pictures of Mexican folklore.
COZUMEL.- Maya YucatÃ¡n: Kasam, Lumil "Land of the Swallows". Is the first island in Mexico, the third largest and the second most populous country, is located southeast of Mexico in the Caribbean Sea 50 km from Cancun and is (together with the inland enclaves Calica and Xel-Ha) one of the nine municipalities of the state of Quintana Roo.
TULUM.- The city received in ancient Mayan name of "Zama" (meaning "dawn or morning") and the current Tulum (âRampartâ). This name seems to have been used to refer to the city when it was already in ruins, refers to the wall that surrounded it. It is considered that Tulum was an important center of worship for the so-called "Descending God." Although inscriptions have been found dating from 564, most of the buildings seen today were built by the Post-Classic period of Mayan civilization, between years 1200 and 1450.The city was still inhabited in the early years of the Spanish colony, but in the late sixteenth century were no longer residents. Some frescoes found inside buildings suggest some Mixtec influence in the community.
XEL-HÃ.- It is an ecological park, located in the state of Quintana Roo. It is characterized by a large creek creek where the water from a river meets the Caribbean Sea; forming the suitable species for the coexistence of 70 species of marine and freshwater. It is for this reason that Xel-Ha is known as the largest natural aquarium in the world. Also as the space of many specimens of flora and fauna of the region, was given to Xel-Ha the title: Natural Wonder of Mexico. Located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, 122 km south of Cancun and 13 km north of the archaeological site of Tulum, by Cancun -Tulum Highway. Xel-Ha is composed of two Mayan words which together mean "water Entrance", which is a clear reference to its geographical structure or "Birthplace of the Waters." A legend about the origin of Xel-Ha Mayan gods mind that, after conjugate in one place the best of themselves, they created three guardians: Huh, the iguana, guardian of the land. Mo, the macaw, is the guardian of heaven and Kay-Op, parrot fish, guardian of the waters. Then the gods decided to deliver this natural paradise for humanity.
