Isla Contoy, is a small Mexican island, belonging to the municipality of Isla Mujeres, is located in the state of Quintana Roo, approximately 30 km north of the island. The island is 8.75 km long, and from 200 to 700 m, 500 m wide, it has an area of 230 ha. of land surface. Since 1961 the island is protected by the Mexican government, and was declared a national park in 1998, it has also been known as "The Island of Birds". To the south of the island is the Ixlaché reef, which is part of the second largest barrier reef in the world.
